Instrumental students should be prepared to demonstrate technique, style, sightreading and improvisation. It is not necessary to bring in a prepared piece, but if the student has something prepared which demonstrates his/her abilities, Mr. Brown will listen to a short portion of the piece. Emphasis will be on reading ability, understanding of jazz style and vocabulary and maturity of sound and swing.

Do not expect to get into a Roosevelt Jazz instrumental ensemble if you have not been playing over the summer. On the other hand...if you're interested in Jazz at Roosevelt...GO FOR IT!!

Participation in summer jazz camps in addition to private lessons is highly recommended.
